Bare Necessities is your one-stop guide on how to move towards a more sustainable lifestyle in India. Join us as we get into a dialogue with the authors Sahar Mansoor and Tim de Riddler into the making of the book and how they walk the talk by adapting a zero waste lifestyle themselves.

About the Authors

Sahar Mansoor is the founder and CEO of Bare Necessities, a zero-waste social enterprise. She is a circular-economy nerd, a voracious learner and a curious traveller. Sahar has obtained accredited degrees on environmental topics in India, the USA and England, becoming a University of Cambridge alumni. Her business offers zero-waste personal care, lifestyle, home care and educational products and services, including online sustainability courses called ‘Zero Waste in 30’ and ‘Sustainability in 30’.

She has also volunteered in Guatemala, Jamaica and the Democratic Republic of Congo for humanitarian projects. Her time working at the World Health Organization in Geneva and SELCO Foundation, on implementing decentralized renewable energy projects in rural Karnataka, enabled her to build Bare Necessities from the ground up. Her work has been recognized by Google India, Al Jazeera, NDTV, Vogue, Elle, Femina, India Today, among others.

Sahar has a 500-gram jar of waste that she brings to the sustainability workshops she conducts, which is all the waste she has produced in the last five years. For more, visit https://barenecessities.in/.

Tim de Ridder began his environmental career in Australia, prior to moving to South East Asia and South Asia. He has a master’s degree in environmental management and sustainability from Monash University, Australia. He has organized a wide range of workshops on sustainability, with a focus on the circular economy, the creation of an online education course on waste in India and community engagement initiatives in Cambodia and Malaysia.

He has also written widely on environmental topics, including a research paper on the livelihoods of low-income communities and the benefits of carbon farming for indigenous Australians.

A word about the Moderator

Tanya Rao, now known for founding the cultural community centre - The Chalet, dabbled in various industries before establishing The Chalet. From playing professional tennis from the age of 7 for ten years, to brief stint in television journalism or joining the founding team of KWAN Entertainment in South India, she’s picked the best of all worlds to incorporate into her dreams and vision.

While working closely with influential people and the exposure all the industries offered her helped her zero in what she wants to do today. The Chalet is a space that runs parallel to her ideals and value-systems, all which cater to a large section of people. The Chalet is a unification of a co-working space, an activity centre, cafe and retail spaces.  The space, as well as Tanya, helps innovators, and leaders grow through providing the platform to bridge the gap between them and their vision.
