Exhibition Summary:

It is quite common to have Heritage Status awarded to monuments and architectural wonders, however Hyderabad is the only city where the unique Deccan Rock formations share the same honor. This has been made possible by the tireless efforts of the Society to Save Rocks, the lone NGO in India that works exclusively for rock conservation and integration. What started in 1996 by environment enthusiasts of the twin cities as a small initiative has grown over twenty five years to encourage people to not just take notice of the 2500 million year old rocks but to protect them from destruction and integrate them into their living spaces.

Peninsular India mostly comprises of hard crystalline rocks formed by consolidation and crystallization of magma like granites and gneisses. These rocks largely occur in the Deccan Plateau covering Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra. The weathered outcrops offer the most aesthetic balancing formations – the perfect awe inspiring subjects, silently waiting to be captured by the avid photographer. Here we have the works of a group of passionate photographers, rock climbers and ecology warriors, who have toiled hard to capture the majestic, irreplaceable Natural Heritage of rocks.

Why rocks? Rocks per se support a fascinating variety of flora and fauna, recharge precious ground water and are responsible for the formation of water bodies. Their mineral content contributes to the soil and the vegetation around them. Rocks offer themselves for recreation, adventure tourism, as lung space and just being in their midst, works as an instant stress buster.

In this, our 25th year of rock conservation, the Society gives you the opportunity to get a feel of the great outdoors while indoors - a ‘lockdown luxury’ that can be enjoyed from all parts of the globe and help you add these destinations to your travel bucket list.

You will see that Rocks do matter, one way or the other, and fragmenting them into building material is not just permanent damage, it undermines human existence. Recent Covid-19 lessons have spelt loud and clear – that we cannot afford to tamper with the delicate balance of our ecosystem, be it oxygen, green cover, or rivers.  Nature’s gifts are truly priceless, and the prehistoric rocks of the Deccan are well worth protecting!
